Ingredients
2 tbsp unsalted butter
2 large sweet or yellow onions, thinly sliced
1/2 tsp kosher salt
1/4 tsp black pepper
8 oz cream cheese, softened to room temperature
1 cup sour cream
1/4 cup mayonnaise
1 tsp Worcestershire sauce
1/2 tsp garlic powder
Fresh chives, for garnish
Instructions
1. Melt butter in a large skillet over medium-low heat. Add the sliced onions and cook slowly, stirring occasionally, for 45-60 minutes, until they are deep amber brown and jammy. Season with salt and pepper in the last 10 minutes of cooking.
2. Remove the onions from the skillet and let them cool completely. Once cooled, give them a fine chop.
3. In a medium bowl, beat the softened cream cheese with a hand mixer until smooth. Add the sour cream, mayonnaise, Worcestershire sauce, and garlic powder. Mix until fully combined.
4. Fold the chopped caramelized onions into the cream cheese mixture until evenly distributed.
5. Cover and refrigerate for at least 2 hours, or preferably overnight, to allow the flavors to meld.
6. Before serving, garnish with freshly chopped chives. Serve with potato chips, crackers, or fresh vegetables.
Notes
For the best flavor, use full-fat sour cream and cream cheese.
Don’t rush the caramelization process! Low and slow is the key to developing that deep, sweet onion flavor.
The dip can be made up to 3 days in advance and stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator.
